Sorry about his luck. It's not happening. I ain't exactly burdened with an excess of chivalry, but I don't want that girl getting caught up in the same crap I got caught up in ages ago. She didn't go looking for it- it just found her.
Longer than that. The Talisman's pretty recent compared to the rest of it. [He trails off and moves on with the conversation.] That'll work out. I can't exactly leave the Pop Boy Wonder now, anyway.
I'm bad with authority and I'm even worse at being a team player. Free spirit kinda thing. This whole situation? It's easier 'cause I know I can walk anytime I want.
Well, yeah, but I could walk away from the Knights anytime I wanted, too.
[ except she's not so sure of that, and it reflects a tiny bit in her tone. she's never heard of anyone leaving the knights, and there's gotta be more reason for that than 'everyone's a good fit.' ]
You don't go into places like this and just walk. I'm not saying Wynn'll kill you if you leave the family, but I am saying you don't have many options if you do. Especially if you're from the wrong side of the Veil. No one's got any sympathy for people who don't technically exist. You die here, no one'll mourn you. No one will ever remember you were gone. The Knights give you something you don't have anywhere else and once you get that, it becomes damn hard to turn your back on it.
Maybe it is, but take away the spiked kool-aid and the rampant fanatacism, all a cult does is give people who don't have anywhere else to go a safe space where they don't have to fight against the world anymore.
Yeah, but don't get me wrong, if I say I believe the knights take advantage of people without options, I don't mean it in a bad way. They get something out of it, but so do the kids they bring in. It's symbiotic.
[He pauses, sighing.] And it's not me. I don't like belonging- I like being nowhere.
I - Don't get me wrong, Des, I'm not trying to evangelize you any more than the next person, but you've been working with us for close to a year. You belong with us. Even if not with the knights in general. What's stopping you?
Me. [Another sigh] You know a few things about me- you know I'm old, that I heal fast, and I've got a mouth on me. But there's more to the story. Wynn knows and he's still willing to take the risks, but I'm not. We get done with this job, that'll be it. I go back to New York or Chicago or wherever the hell I feel like being until the next time I trip over you guys and that'll be it.

[ beat. ]
I - Sorry. You don't have to answer that. The short of it is that Jade wants you with her on the tour if she joins up.

Then, I guess we'll be seeing more of you in the next few months.
