Alright, so hopefully everybody's had some time to settle in by now, I hope.  Get the general lay of the land or what have you.  

So, uh.  I'm Fred Jr., and I'm with the Dragon's Hide.  You know, the fighter sect of the Knighthood.  We're hosting an open training session upstairs tomorrow to try to get a feel for where everybody's at.  If you want to get your own sword, we can help get you set up with one - or any other kind of weapon beyond your Excaliburs.  We'll be there to work on swordmanship, archery, firearms, etc. and give a general tour of how the training room and armory are set up.  It's right at the top of the main steps from the lobby on the second floor - you can't miss it.  

I know some of your Knights are gonna wanna accompany you, so that's on the two of you.  I'll let 'em know you're all coming.  We get started around ten.

Well, yeah, but I thought it might just be a token thing, like that armour.

We don't wear the armour regularly, do we?

Most people don't, but that's on you. We offer a lot of alternatives, and some people go without any at all.

[bigbad]

So long as I don't have to deal with the bulky stuff from the ceremony. That would get in the way more than anything else.

[A beat.]

Do you have any leather?

[nepotism]

Yeah, it won't really help against really heavy weapons or bullets, but it does lessen a few blows. [He jerks a thumb over his shoulder] Over on that rack.

[bigbad]

[Spike can't actually see the rack, thanks to being on a phone, so he just nods.]

Yeah, seems like it'd get in the way less, you know? You could actually move. Plus, it'd look a hell of a lot more cool than all that metal plate.

[Which is more important.]

[nepotism]

[WOW MAYBE I FORGOT WHICH THREAD I WAS TAGGING OK. But its still a video phone so... maybe Fred just assumed he could. 8|

Anyway, that makes him chuckle. ]

Very few Knights rock a lot of the full plate armor. Pretty sure Lan's one of the only ones. And he's the exception to a lotta rules.

[A beat] You his new squire?

[bigbad]

[I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT HAVE but it's okay, Spike can look at it in person later.

For now, he grimaces in a way that makes it clear exactly how pleased he is with who he's been squired to.]

Yeah.

[nepotism]

[He grins a little, shaking his head] Hey. It could be worse. At least Lan knows his stuff.

[bigbad]

Does 'his stuff' cover anything past the fifteenth century?

[nepotism]

It's not really an exact comparison. Fifteenth century Earth's a lot different from the Shadow World.

[bigbad]

Really? What's Shadow World like? Besides horribly sexist?

[nepotism]

Full of magic, for one.

[bigbad]

...here isn't?

[nepotism]

Not consistently. And magic here's less powerful than it is in that world. We don't have gods and goddesses mucking around in things all the time, either.

[bigbad]

Oh. Glad to hear it. [Spike doesn't think he'd like a god messing around in his life. and getting Buffy killed I mean what But the other part's interesting.] So what, your witches just try a spell and if it doesn't work, they've got to just try again the next day?

[nepotism]

No, nothing like that, I don't think. But sometimes magic just goes away for years at a time. Like... twenty, thirty, forty years or more.

[bigbad]

Is it here now?

[nepotism]

Has been my whole life. The last downtime ended in 1975, and we've had it ever since. There's no set pattern to when it goes out though, I guess.

[bigbad]

[Spike doesn't think he's a particularly magically inclined person, but he makes a note to be wary of failing spells just the same.]

There are a lot of magic creatures around, though, aren't there? What happens to them?

[He's pretty sure there's some magic involved in being a vampire, and he's highly opposed to just dropping dead if magic fades. Seems a valid concern to him.]

[nepotism]

Depends on the creature. Some of them can get by just fine. Others tend to go dormant, into hibernation for awhile.

[bigbad]

[Spike really hopes he's not the hibernation sort. It sounds right dull.]

Reckon it'll go away again soon?

[nepotism]

Who knows? The point is that it's totally unpredictable. I mean, the Hoard scientists keep trying to pinpoint ways to measure it but so far, no luck.

[bigbad]

That much makes sense, at least. Science and magic, you know. I'd imagine it's a bit like oil and water.

[nepotism]

Some of them don't think so.

[bigbad]

Well, they're clearly not as smart as they think they are.

[nepotism]

Just don't let some of them hear you say that. A few of 'em can pack a punch.

[bigbad]

Fine by me, so can I.

[nepotism]

Hey, haven't you ever heard not to hit a guy with glasses?

What, not even if he hits first?

[nepotism]

Might depend on how hard he can hit.

[bigbad]

Thought you said they could pack a punch.

[nepotistic]

[That seems to get a laugh outta him] ... Guess I did. Alright, fair's fair.
