[he stiffens as soon as she says his name and then ... stays frozen. he was not expecting this. nope. but he also knows that maybe he should have been. and that makes him mad — at himself.]

What's that supposed to mean?

It means my dad is gonna be watching my every move when I'm back home. And the moves of every person who gets anywhere near me.

I assume that's the last thing you want to deal with, all things considered.

[ambitionist]

Oh, like I give a shit. What, you think he won't like me?

[that's ... reasonable, he decides. there are a lot of things about him and his life that probably aren't parent-friendly. but HE'S NOT THE WORST EITHER GOD DAMN IT.]

[panaceum]

[ she folds her arms across her chest, raising her eyebrows at him ] I think no girl is worth getting mixed back up with organized criminals for you. It's not a question of whether he likes you or not. In fact, it might be worse for you if he does.

[ambitionist]

[his raises his eyebrows back. petulant? yes. call 1-800-idgaf.] And I think you don't get to make that decision for me.

[panaceum]

Are you getting all sentimental on me, Special K? [ it's not clear how she feels about it if the answer is yes ] I thought you would want a clean break. Most do.

[ambitionist]

I know, I know. I have emotions. It's shocking. Call the press. [ he rolls his eyes a little, but almost smiles. almost. he enjoys her dumb names for him ok.] I'm a fan of the clean break. But I don't want a break, that's the point.

[panaceum]

So what exactly do you want?

[ambitionist]

I know things can't stay exactly the same, but maybe ... they could stay next to the same. You and me, having our thing, whenever. I get that you'll be more busy, but why's that so hard?

[panaceum]

Because here I have the freedom to get away with that. No one's watching my every move. No one's watching your every move because of me.

I can deal with it. You shouldn't have to.

[ambitionist]

[ he can only be in denial about what that would mean for him for so long. it's not good. he knows she's right, the logical thing to do would be for them to go their separate ways.

and yet ... ]

Is that what you want? Tell me what you want. If you can fuckin' look at me and tell me you don't wanna see me again, then fine.

[panaceum]

[ she squares her shoulders and lifts her eyes to his, clearly ready to say as much, her chin stubbornly jutting up. but the second they lock gazes, something crumples in her and she blinks, looking away almost instantly as she tries to fight back apparent tears ] That's not fucking fair.

[ambitionist]

[he keeps staring at her even after she looks away, trying to keep a lock down on all these feelings he doesn't want to feel — anger? hurt? whatever it is, he doesn't like it and would like to stop feeling it now. it's not like he can feel happy that she couldn't tell him to leave. it's not a real victory when their lives are still a mess.]

What's so unfair? That I won't make it easy for you to lie? Oh no, what a fucking tragedy. If neither of us want to stop, then there has to be something we can do.

[panaceum]

Fine. [ she whirls away, her back to him as her hands grip her arms, crossed tightly across her chest ] So we try to hide it.

[ambitionist]

Fine. [he echoes her – not mockingly but not exactly accidentally, either.] We can do that. It's not like we aren't sneaky as fuck.

[panaceum]

Maybe, but we're talking about a guy who keeps psychics on the payroll.

[ambitionist]

[he snorts, but it's incredulous like "of course this is my fuckin life."] Yeah, I used to work with all psions. I'm used to working hard to keep my thoughts to myself.

[panaceum]

And you trust me to do the same? With your life?

[ambitionist]

Yeah. [he surprises himself with how easily the answer comes, but it's because he values his life so little, right? not because he actually trusts her -- or anyone -- that much? yeah, that's what he'll tell himself.] If you've got a good reason why I shouldn't, you better speak now.

[panaceum]

[ that actually causes her to smirk a little, and she shakes her head in disbelief ] Besides that I'm kind of an asshole?

[ambitionist]

I mean ... have you met me? I'm not miss fuckin' congeniality over here either.

[panaceum]

I noticed. [ she slides forward, mockingly smacking him on the shoulder ] Fine. We'll do this.

[ambitionist]

See, that's not so bad, is it? [he grins like this is the most chill thing ever. they were just deciding where to order pizza. it's fine.]

[panaceum]

Say that when you wake up with a horse head in your bed. [ but the joke makes it clear she's at least done taking it seriously for the moment. ]
