When he opens the package he finds a copious display of a variety of cookies and a note reading:] I had an over-abundance of sweets and knew just who to share them with. Hope these find your well and successful on your first mission. Keep in touch. ~ Francesca

Well, I haven't heard any bad news regarding Haymitch. And Katniss is here and... [She pauses, looking down before finishing.] She's fine.

Just fine? [His default mode is suspicious and he knows Katniss tends to be ... a handful of hot mess.]

She's in good health, and safe. It's nothing like that. [She pauses, still not sure how to word all this. And then sighs.] She was there, when I, you know, died. I heard she was fairly shaken, which is understandable, but I think she's recovering well. I haven't had much opportunity to speak to her about it yet.

[Well. That's. Nice. He scrubs his hand over his face. Ugh. She had been hysterical more than a few times before he showed up, back when they were in the Games together. No matter how little she remembered now, he guessed she hadn't shaken that tendency.] Look out for her for me, would you? Make sure she stays well.

Of course. [There's a sincerity behind her promise that might seem strange given how they barely know each other, but her feelings towards Katniss are complicated to begin with.] And she has Christos to look out for her as well. She couldn't be safer.

Christos? [He never met her mentor or anything, okay.]

Christos La Krail. She's squired to him. He's my [She searches for the right words.] oldest friend.

As long as he has your seal of approval ...

I trust him more than anyone else and he will keep her safe. You have my word as well.

[She gives him a funny look because she's not sure whether to be endeared or suspicious of his self-assured attitude.] It will serve you well.

It has. I mean to say, I've been in a lot of tight situations before I was here. [ie the motherfucking Hunger Games.] I wouldn't be here now if I weren't a quick thinker.

[She looks at him curiously.] Like what? What kind of situations?

Life or death ones, obviously.

[that's all he's handing out, gurl.]

I'm almost forgot you were all about secrets.

I'll still trade you one of yours for one of mine.

Perhaps this would be easier if I knew what kind of secrets you were after...

The ones you didn't give up for me last time. Something more personal, maybe. Something you'd never tell another soul.

And you'll tell me something personal about yourself, then? Something you've never told anyone else?

Maybe. Or very few, at least. We'll have to see.

Why? [She pauses, studying him for a couple moments.] What's your game? [She doesn't seem so much suspicious as curious, squinting at him.]

Why not? I collect secrets. Believe in them. They're my currency. There's a lot of power in them, you know. So much more than there is in common things like money.

Are you banking on trust or blackmail? [She scoffs at her own statement, mumbling:] As if there's really a difference.
